From Crafty Projects to Project-Based Learning

By Jeremy Johnson, DOSM, Centric Learning and Guest Author, Danielle Rivenbark, www.daniellerivenbark.com

I ran across a great older blog post from Danielle Rivenbark that originated in 2016.  It was about making craft projects in school.  After reading the article, it reminded me that what we called “crafty school projects” back then has evolved into something truly powerful in education today — Project-Based Learning (PBL).  Below is Danielle’s original blog post and my thoughts afterward.

I was walking with a colleague of mine, Maura, last week when she said that she had been thinking of me. Of course, I was perplexed.

“Oh?” I asked. “How so?”

She told me a story about her daughter’s school project that had me so excited about all that I have to look forward to. I thought it was the perfect story to share.

Spotlight: Why Project-Based Learning Transforms How Students See Their Education

When learning connects to life, everything changes.

Picture this: Sarah, a 10th grader who always struggled with traditional math classes, is now confidently calculating material costs, creating scaled drawings, and presenting budget proposals. What changed? She's designing a tiny house as part of her geometry project at Centric Learning.  This is the power of project-based learning (PBL) – and it's transforming educational journeys for thousands of students just like Sarah.

Insanity in Alternative Education

By Jeremy Johnson, DOSM, Centric Learning

At some point in our lives, we all have heard insanity defined as doing the same thing repeatedly but expecting different results. A more literal definition would be “extreme foolishness; folly; senselessness; foolhardiness” (Dictionary.com). I would agree that the definition we have become accustomed to meets the more literal definition found at Dictionary.com when it comes to teaching our alternative students. Our problem does not lie in our ability to define insanity, but rather in our inability to change direction. In my opinion, that rings true in alternative education.
